WOPEX is a new innovative and ecologically friendly method of producing graphite pencils. WOPEX is created from biproducts of the wood manufacturing industries. The source is carefully managed German forests close to the Staedtler manufacturing center. Wood chips and sawdust are ground into very fine “wood-dust” and combined with plastic polymer. This combination becomes a pliable paste that can be extruded through Staedtler machinery similar to extruding erasers and other plastic products. The WOPEX graphite goes through a similar process that makes them extrudable also. The WOPEX pencils are formed by simultaneously extruding the wood and graphite at the same time.
